One time, a yoga teacher who had come to a few of my classes came up to me after our practice and said, “You teach really screwed up breathing!”

I laughed and said, “Yeah, well, keep trying it and you might discover there’s something to it.” Eventually she got it and even went on to do my teacher training program. The reason she was so confused at first is because I teach what I call “Structural Breath” during asana practice. I learned it from my viniyoga teachers – and it’s quite different from the 3-part breath that is commonly taught – almost the direct opposite.

When I first learned structural breath I was quite confused, and TBH, a little grumpy about it – it was so different from how I’d be taught the diirgha pranayama breath early in my studies. But, after a while I started to “get it” in my body. And since then, I have not looked back – it is such a powerful way to use the breath for asana practice.
